IntroductionA few years ago, we reviewed the evidence for pharmacists as accessible primary health care providers and concluded that “the evidence suggests that pharmacists play a major primary care role that is enhanced by their accessibility.”1 Indeed, the statement “pharmacists are the most accessible health care provider” is used frequently.

•Educational programs designed for health care professionals are often not evaluated at the patient care level to determine impact on patient outcomes. •Pharmacists completed the Hypertension Canada Professional Certification Program (HC-PCP) and then provided care according to the program and guideline recommendations. •The HC-PCP taken by pharmacists resulted in a 4.76 mmHg greater systolic blood pressure reduction in their patients over 3 months, compared to usual care.
