No doubt you have seen the recent report from the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP), “Under stress and duress: The prevalence and impact of corporate influence on pharmacy professional autonomy and wellbeing: An analysis of OCP registrant survey and town hall responses.”1 It doesn’t paint a pretty picture of modern pharmacy practice. Briefly, the OCP surveyed registrants in the spring of 2024, receiving about 4300 responses, and held 4 town hall meetings, which had 1300 participants.

IntroductionA few years ago, we reviewed the evidence for pharmacists as accessible primary health care providers and concluded that “the evidence suggests that pharmacists play a major primary care role that is enhanced by their accessibility.”1 Indeed, the statement “pharmacists are the most accessible health care provider” is used frequently.
