It took 92 minutes to decide a winner, but the Manhattan girls’ soccer team fell 2-1 in heartbreaking fashion in double overtime to Topeka Hayden. “We’ve got to find a way to keep our head up,” head coach Mike Sanchez said after the defeat. “This was the third overtime game we’ve played this year, but have yet to come out on the winning end of it.

Frankfort baseball continued its strong season as they knocked off rival Wabaunsee 9-1 at home on Friday at Tom Watson Ball Field in Frankfort. The two teams were set to play a doubleheader, but the second contest was rained out. “It was a slow start, but then we kicked it in there in the middle innings,” Frankfort head coach Drue Henton said.

Facing another state contender, the Manhattan High Indians battled hard, but fell short to Wichita-Trinity Academy, 2-0. The Indians (5-6-0) and Knights (7-0-2) were even at halftime, but Trinity scored at the 19:11 mark in the second half to take the lead. The Knights got insurance with another goal with 3:12 left in the game. MHS head coach Mike Sanchez felt his team didn’t play up to what they’re capable of. “There are just things we need to clean up and work on,” Sanchez said.

In a tightly contested league battle, Manhattan High girls’ soccer defeated Topeka High, 2-1, Tuesday at Bishop Stadium. Junior Tess Henry’s goal at the 18:58 mark of the second half was the difference in the game. Both teams struggled out of the gate, with a couple of near-goals by both sides in the first half. MHS head coach Mike Sanchez credited the slow start to the Indians not being themselves. “I think we were just being static,” Sanchez said.

Once again, Manhattan High track and field took first place with the boys' and girls' squads in the Indians’ home meet at Bishop Stadium on Friday. The Manhattan boys scored 208 points, and the girls scored 243. The invite had fewer competitors than normal due to the Kansas Relays in Lawrence and a holiday weekend. The six-team field consisted of Maize, Wichita East, Junction City, Topeka High, and Highland Park. Still, MHS took full advantage of the opportunity to compete on its home turf.
