Voters in three West Sussex divisions will head for the ballot boxes on Thursday (June 5)By-elections for new county councillors are being held in St Leonard’s Forest (Horsham district), Burgess Hill North, and Hassocks & Burgess Hill South. They follow the resignations of Katie Nagel (Conservative, elected 2021), Stuart Condie (Lib Dem, elected 2021) and Kirsty Lord (Lib Dem, elected 2017).

Plans to build 1,300 homes in Tangmere have been given the go-ahead by Chichester District Council. The outline application for land between the A27 and Copse Farm, in Tangmere Road, has taken almost five years to prepare and consider. Known as the Tangmere Strategic Development Location Site, the plans were first proposed by Countryside Properties, part of the Vistry Group, in November 2020.

Taxi licensing fees in Chichester have been increased by the district council to plug a gap in its costs. Legally, the cost of licensing the district’s hackney carriage and private hire vehicles is supposed to be fully covered by income from fees and charges. But in recent years, the council has been running things at a deficit, with a shortfall of £23,700 forecast. During a meeting of the general licensing committee on Wednesday (June 4), it was agreed that the fees would be increased by 10%.

The stalling of Mid Sussex District Council’s District Plan will ‘play into the hands of opportunistic developers’, the Bolney Action Group has declared. The group, which is currently opposing proposals for 200 homes in the village, spoke out after a planning inspector reported that the Plan could be set for failure.

Plans to demolish a former piggery and replace it with seven business units have been submitted to Horsham District Council. The application for Northlands Business Park, in Warnham, comes two years after permission was given for four units on the site. If approved, three dilapidated buildings which are currently used for parking and storage, will be demolished and replaced with the seven office units.
