PLANS to upgrade Tennant Creek’s Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre (NNACC) have progressed, with the awarding of a $7.1 million construction tender to a joint venture between Territory companies ANT Galactic and M&J Builders. Established in 2003 on the sacred site of the Nyinkka (spiny-tailed goanna), NNACC – which is the cultural and social hub of the town - features a retail gallery; art production, exhibition, and performance spaces; as well as a museum and café.

THE Chair of a Territory Aboriginal Corporation has highlighted Traditional Owners’ concerns about a major blaze from Jemena’s gas pipeline in Queensland, cutting gas to Gladstone. Chair of Nurrdalinji Native Title Aboriginal Corporation, Djingili Elder Samuel Sandy (pictured above), a former resident of Elliott, said if an event like that happened in the NT it would be a catastrophe, given the major bushfires across the region last September.

THE BRADAAG Board and staff welcomed a visit this week from the Assistant Minister for Indigenous Australians, Senator Malarndirri McCarthy. BRADAAG Chair Elliot McAdam expressed his and the organisation’s staff’s appreciation of the support from the New Jobs Program Trial (NJPT), which enabled the employment of eight cultural wellbeing officers in Ali Curung and Elliott communities.

RECENT rains and flooding have had an unwanted side effect: mosquitos have been exceedingly prevalent over the last week or so. Aside from the simple annoyance of getting bitten, there is also the risk of contracting diseases like Ross River virus, which can cause fever, joint pain, and rash, Japanese encephalitis, which can lead to inflammation of the brain, or Murray Valley encephalitis, which can result in severe headaches, high fever, and neck stiffness.

LOCAL police are calling for information after a hit and run in Tennant Creek Wednesday night. Around 10:30pm, police received a report that a 45-year-old woman had been struck by a vehicle on the Kargaru Camp Access Road. The driver of the vehicle allegedly did not remain at the scene after the incident and did not inform emergency services. The woman suffered serious injuries to her legs and pelvis and was conveyed to Tennant Creek Hospital for treatment.
