PLANS to upgrade Tennant Creek’s Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre (NNACC) have progressed, with the awarding of a $7.1 million construction tender to a joint venture between Territory companies ANT Galactic and M&J Builders. Established in 2003 on the sacred site of the Nyinkka (spiny-tailed goanna), NNACC – which is the cultural and social hub of the town - features a retail gallery; art production, exhibition, and performance spaces; as well as a museum and café.

Neil’s company, Scriven Exploration Pty Ltd, which explores for minerals north of Tennant Creek, recognises the importance of water safety in remote communities. SEVEN students successfully completed their First Aid course recently. During the two-day course, students completed theory and practical aspects of First Aid. With a partner, they had to demonstrate a variety of slings, bandaging, CPR on an adult and baby manikin and respond to a variety of incidents that can arise in everyday life.

STUDENTS from Elliott and Newcastle Waters enjoyed a week on the beautiful waters of Longreach Waterhole. The first day saw the older students canoe the younger students until there were calmer waters and finishing with a well-earned swim. Later in the week the local police visited and spent a few hours on water canoeing with all the students. They joined the students in various relay games and were a great benefit to the three teams participating in canoe basketball.

EMERGENCY services are urging Barkly landowners to prepare for catastrophic fire conditions and ensure they have a bushfire survival plan ready. Acting Chief Fire Officer Joshua Fischer said a fire was reported to 000 about 3pm on Wednesday, and it was determined it was rapidly moving in a north-west direction towards Tennant Creek. Around 6pm that evening, Bushfires NT and NT Fire and Rescue Service crews jointly conducted a number of backburning operations to protect the community.
