BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - The Bryan Police Department announced the passing of a former chief Wednesday. Chief Charles Phelps served with the department from August 1960 to March 1993. He served as the Chief of Police for 13 years from 1980 to 1993. BPD says he was passionate about law enforcement. “It was not just a job, but a lifestyle,” the department wrote. “He was an honorable officer on and off the job.”The department says he earned numerous honors and awards as chief.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - Texas A&M President Mark Welsh can now officially negotiate a contract with Athletic Director Trev Alberts. The details of his contract will be released once it’s finalized. It’s been reported that the university will spend over $4 million to buy Alberts out of his contract with Nebraska, which he signed an eight-year extension last November. That was one of two items on the Board of Regents agenda Wednesday.

BRAZOS COUNTY, Texas (KBTX) - A Brazos County grand jury handed up an indictment for a man accused of murder. Namarion Jackson was a juvenile at the time of his arrest, so his identity was not released. But KBTX has learned that he has since turned 18 and now we know he is the one connected to the murder of Brandon Hall. Hall was murdered back in August 2023. His body was found in the middle of Pleasant Hill Road with a gunshot wound.

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - The City of Brenham named a new interim police chief Thursday. Lloyd Powell will serve in the position. He has an extensive background in criminal justice and two decades of service within the Brenham Police Department. He began his journey in law enforcement after graduating from Brenham High School. He went to Grambling State University where he got a degree in criminal justice. He then got his master’s degree in criminal justice administration at Columbia Southern University.

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - At the end of March, members of the Brazos County community will gather to remember Brazos County Sheriff Leonard Morehead. A memorial service is being held to mark the 100th anniversary of his passing. He was tragically killed during a magic show in 1924. Vicki Smith-Dicky, the wife of current Sheriff Wayne Dicky, joined News 3 at Six Tuesday to talk about the memorial service. “This event will share his story. His story is remarkable,” Smith-Dicky said.
