“Oh, it's just a couple of steps," Breon Arzell says, laughing. "Dance is how we tell stories. That's how stories are told within our community. There's a fair bit of movement."Arzell is both the director and choreographer for Cape Fear Regional Theatre's upcoming production, Once On This Island. Arzell is outspoken and full of laughs. He jokes around with the actors beside him and always seems to be smiling. Arzell has done many productions before, but usually as the choreographer.

"I started running when they didn't have running shoes for ladies," says Sue Langley, avid runner and participant in the upcoming Mid-Carolina Senior Games. Langley, who is 74 years old, talks quickly and excitedly about the upcoming event and her time of preparation for the big day. The road that she and a lot of other female athletes have climbed to get where they are today and compete like they do is nothing to take for granted. It takes work to keep up traditions within neighborhoods, even more so when those neighborhoods happen to be right next to one of the largest Army bases in the world. Thankfully, Tina Young, and many of her neighbors, aren’t opposed to putting in a little elbow grease. Young has lived in the Kinwood neighborhood since the 1970s. Sometime in the 1980s, Kinwood started helping and participating in the neighborhood Woodhaven Garden Club. A staple of the clubs is the now-known Kinwood Luminaries.

Charles Johnson and Ashley Owen walk the space of the ballroom at 1707 Owen Drive. This space used to be the ballroom for the Holiday Inn Bordeaux and is now Cape Fear Regional’s interim performance space — at least for the next two years. It will be the second “act” for the renovations at Cape Fear Regional. The Hotel, too, has seen many changes, going from a hotel space to now Good Homes Bordeaux, an upscale apartment complex. But some of the details from the past have been left behind.

Paul Crenshaw walks through the “mansion” at the back of the Stoney Point Fire Department. This building has stood for years since a local dentist donated the building to the Stoney Point Fire Department’s Trail of Terror event. It has become a staple of the event. Crenshaw walks into the first room and then says he’s going to kill the white lights inside the building to give a more realistic view of what the trail will look like on Friday and Saturday nights in October.

The blue-walled rehearsal space attached to Cape Fear Regional Theatre is a mix of sounds of shoes hitting the floor. A mix of Chuck Taylor's and Cowboy boots move across the room. Looking up from further away, one could only see a sea of mostly cowboy hats on actors, doing steps, swinging in and swinging out, feet kicking up, 1-2-3-4. Again. And again. L Boogie is at the front of the rehearsal space with Camo pants, a long sweatshirt and a hat that reads "Do Good.
