Apr. 12—Old-timers around these parts say that you don't plant your garden here on the Camas Prairie until after the snow has melted off the mountain south of town. Over the years I have found this to be good advice. As long as I wait for the snow to melt I'm pretty likely to get a nice crop, even though I might not get the seeds in the ground until June. If I try to sneak one by and plant a few radish seeds early while the hills are still white with snow, sure as heck I'll have crop failure.

Mar. 20—GRANGEVILLE — Like many small, rural towns, Grangeville has had its share of challenges in its 150 years of existence. Yet it remains a viable community with an evolving business district and a population of mostly friendly folk. "What I like most about the small town of Grangeville," said City Clerk Tonya Kennedy, "is, you can walk down the street, you say hi to people, you can smile at people and you get that same reaction back.

Mar. 15—I stopped running 10 years ago. It was after I'd finished two marathons and a half dozen half marathons and my tank was on empty. Feeling low. So I went to the library and checked out a Mr. Monk detective book in large print by Lee Goldberg. It was hilarious — this eccentric, OCD sleuth cracking crimes with the most obscure clues. After I finished the first book I checked out a second and a third and by that time I was over my doldrums and feeling restored to my old happy self.

Mar. 1—The world is divided, as we know, into winners and losers and for the most part I have been a loser. It's not that I haven't tried to win a few contests or enter a lottery or put my name and five cereal box tops into the mail for a chance to win a new KitchenAid mixer or a bag of cat food. I'm competitive enough but 99% of the time I fail at these contests and just waste my stamp.
