One Saturday afternoon last month, a procession of seven vans pulled into an industrial estate. A dozen bleary-eyed drivers — myself among them — emerged, blinking, into the sunshine. Legs stretched, necks cracked. Surrounded by Soviet-era tower blocks, Oleksandr Stanasiuk greeted us with arms outstretched. “Welcome to Ukraine,” he said, smiling. According to the industry body British Lion, we're eating 18 per cent more eggs in Britain than we were 20 years ago, from an average of 169 per year each in 2004 to 199 in 2024. That's 12.8 billion eggs a year. Also on the rise are prices. A dozen eggs are used as one of the informal metrics of inflation and their price has risen by about 20 per cent since January.
