One Saturday afternoon last month, a procession of seven vans pulled into an industrial estate. A dozen bleary-eyed drivers — myself among them — emerged, blinking, into the sunshine. Legs stretched, necks cracked. Surrounded by Soviet-era tower blocks, Oleksandr Stanasiuk greeted us with arms outstretched. “Welcome to Ukraine,” he said, smiling. We had reached the end of an almost nonstop 36-hour drive that began six countries and 1,251 miles away in Teddington, southwest London.

For David Challen, reading last year about the decades-long abuse of Gisèle Pelicot by her husband and dozens of other men brought back a flurry of emotions. “It highlighted the normality of these men in our society,” Challen says. “My dad was not a monster. He was deeply complex. If society labels them monsters, it’s washing its hands of how they are created.”Challen, 38, knows better than most that behind every sensational headline is a web of complexity.

It may seem like Club Tropicana for chickens, but this brood has a job to do: laying eggs, which are at peak popularity. According to the industry body British Lion, we're eating 18 per cent more eggs in Britain than we were 20 years ago, from an average of 169 per year each in 2004 to 199 in 2024. That's 12.8 billion eggs a year. Also on the rise are prices. A dozen eggs are used as one of the informal metrics of inflation and their price has risen by about 20 per cent since January.
