TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - NiJa Canady’s fanbase in her home city is as strong as ever. Fans gathered at Evergy Plaza for a watch party to see the Topeka native fight for a National Championship on Friday night. Canady and the Texas Tech Red Raiders fell 10-4 to Texas in the winner-takes-all Women’s College World Series Championship series finale, ending the year as National Runners Up. Regardless of the result, local fans were excited to support the star athlete.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) - Every year, the Rock Chalk Roundball Classic raises money to benefit select local children battling cancer. In 2025, they’re adding to the generosity. Voice of the Jayhawks and Rock Chalk Roundball Classic Director Brian Hanni announced on Friday that they’ll also be benefitting one local parent fighting cancer this year, in addition to the six local children.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - WIBW named 32 Scholar-Athletes of the Week throughout the 2024-25 school year. On Tuesday, all 32 were invited to the station before heading off to college and other post-grad plans, for the annual Scholar-Athlete reception. Two scholarships were awarded at random, by way of drawing names, to two lucky scholar athletes. The scholarships were donated by sponsors Kaw Valley Bank and Cable Dahmer.

(WIBW) - In 31 years of girls soccer being an official KSHSAA sport, only 5 of 69 state champions across all classes have been teams from outside the Kansas City area. “Every time I walk in the gym and I see all the different state championships in every other sport and every other activity has brought to us, I just wanted girls soccer to be a part of that list,” longtime head coach Brian Hensyel said. “The girls had gotten close so many times.

WICHITA, Kan. (WIBW) - Washburn Rural girls soccer won its first ever 6A State Championship game on Saturday. The Junior Blues defeated Mill Valley 1-0 at Stryker Sports Complex. The game remained scoreless through regulation and double overtime, sending it penalty kicks. That’s where Rural senior Bristol Karr scored the game winner, giving the Junior Blues their first 6A State Championship win in program history.
