TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - NiJa Canady’s fanbase in her home city is as strong as ever. Fans gathered at Evergy Plaza for a watch party to see the Topeka native fight for a National Championship on Friday night. Canady and the Texas Tech Red Raiders fell 10-4 to Texas in the winner-takes-all Women’s College World Series Championship series finale, ending the year as National Runners Up. Regardless of the result, local fans were excited to support the star athlete.

(WIBW) - Topeka residents got to enjoy a picnic at the Little Oakland Park with local law enforcement while also pitching in on a new initiative aimed at reducing violent crime in the capital city. I find that it works better when our community knows ahead of time what we’re doing. A new initiative called PACT or police and community together, is aiming to reduce violent crime in the capital city by giving a voice to everyone in the community.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - 14 participants graduated from the inaugural Shawnee County District Attorney’s office Citizen’s Academy Wednesday. The eight-week educational program is designed to give Shawnee County residents an inside look at the criminal justice system and the responsibilities of the district attorney’s office. The academy covered topics like human trafficking investigations, the trial process, an overview of the criminal justice system and more.
