Five seniors at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School will be collegiate athletes next fall. The regional high school celebrated the athletes Thursday afternoon by organizing a signing day for the students and their families. West Tisbury Police say they will file a charge against a town employee after he allegedly shoved a man at the annual town meeting last month. West Tisbury building inspector Joseph Tierney is facing a charge of assault and battery on an elderly person after resident Leon Brathwaite told police that Mr. Tierney pushed him to the ground at the April 8 town meeting, according to a police report.

Summertime means baseball at the Shark Tank on Martha’s Vineyard. The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks summer collegiate league opens their 14th season on Tuesday, June 3, with a home game against the Vermont Mountaineers. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m.New additions at the ball park this year include more food service for easier access, according to general manager Russ Curran. “We’re going to be offering food in the beer garden area as well this year,” he said.

When endurance swimmer Lewis Pugh realized that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Jaws, he knew it was the right time to do something no one had done before. In a span of 12 days, Mr. Pugh swam 58 miles around Martha’s Vineyard to change the public perception about sharks. While he has taken part in many races to raise awareness for various causes, this is the first time he has done it for the sole purpose of bringing attention to a specific species.

Islanders lined the roads of Vineyard Haven Monday morning to honor fallen servicemen for the annual Memorial Day parade. Veterans, police officers and military personnel marched from American Legion Post 257 to Oak Grove Cemetery as the crowds cheered them on. Soldiers from many different wars were in attendance. — Tim Johnson The march passed through the Avenue of the Flags in the cemetery, where 450 flags had been placed earlier that morning.
