A grammar school, a historic church and a high school performing arts center: what do these three locations have in common? On Tuesday, they will each play an integral role in the ongoing democratic traditions of the Island. Town meeting season is here again, and opens on April 8 in West Tisbury, Edgartown and Oak Bluffs. On Tuesday, voters will travel to the West Tisbury School, the Old Whaling Church and the Performing Arts Center to debate in public on matters essential to the towns.

The Goss Community Press, which prints the Vineyard Gazette each week, rolled onto the Island and was delivered to 34 South Summer street on April 18, 1975 and completed its first print run on May 9, 1975. This puts the old workhouse at 50 years old; definitely a birthday to celebrate.

Jules Feiffer, the Pulitzer-prize winning cartoonist, playwright, author and screenwriter, whose satirical wit and illustrations were for a time the voice of the Village Voice, and syndicated in hundreds of newspapers around the country, died on Jan. 17. He was 95. Mr. Feiffer was a longtime Vineyarder who divided his time between here and New York City. He was a fixture in both worlds, a regular in the literary society of New York and at events all over the Island.

The year’s first full moon is called the Wolf Moon. But fear not, wolves are not on the agenda next week when the moon is full. Instead, owls are the main event, thanks to Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary’s Full Moon Owl Prowl. The prowl takes place on Monday, Jan. 13, and will be led by Sydney Pigott, an experienced hand with owls. Ms. Pigott is the education coordinator and camp director at Felix Neck and has led the full moon tours for three years.

Percival Everett won the National Book Award for his novel James, a retelling of the Mark Twain novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the slave, Jim’s, perspective. A longtime summer visitor to the Vineyard, Mr. Everett accepted the award in New York on Wednesday. Mr. Everett took part in the Martha’s Vineyard Author series this past season, discussing his career and the novel.
