A San Mateo County Health division has changed its name to better reflect the needs of people with disabilities, the county announced. San Mateo County Health’s Aging and Adult Services is now called Aging and Disability Services. “The updated name reflects a growing national movement to acknowledge the needs of persons with disabilities alongside older populations who at time may themselves need long-term services and supports,” said a statement from the county.

Police in Santa Rosa have opened a new substation downtown, the department announced. Santa Rosa Police Chief John Cregan cut the ribbon to the new station at an April 8 grand opening ceremony. The Downtown Substation is in Santa Rosa Plaza and the lease was gifted to the department for 10 years from the Simon Property Group.

The developer of an artificial intelligence startup in Silicon Valley was sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison, the U.S. Department of Justice announced this week. Shaukat Shamim, 53, of Santa Clara, pleaded guilty last September to defrauding investors. According to his plea agreement, Shamim founded YouPlus in 2013, with an idea to develop AI software tools to analyze online video content.

Sonoma County is launching its curbside chipper program early in order to deal with the demand and prevent fires. The county’s free Residential Curbside Chipper Program is maintained by the Permit Sonoma Fire Prevention Division and is a way to help residents create defensible spaces around their property in case of wildfire. It also encourages the removal of vegetation along access routes, the county said.
