A person is under arrest for one of the two shootings at the Brookhaven Apartments in Tuscaloosa. 36-year-old Brett Abrams of Tuscaloosa was arrested and charged with attempted murder. This comes about two weeks after two men were shot during a shootout there. Both men are expected to recover from their injuries. Abrams is in the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond.

On average, 38 children die each year in the U.S. from being trapped inside a hot car. In Alabama, there were two in 2023. And that’s two too many. That’s why Northport Fire Rescue partnered with Safe Kids Tuscaloosa for a get together Monday offering tips for ensuring no one leaves their children in a hot car. The safety awareness campaign is titled Look Before You Lock. Northport Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Roger Potter said most children don’t die in hot cars because they are left behind.

Spring graduation has begun. The first University of Alabama students walked across the stage Friday afternoon. That ceremony was followed by another commencement at 7pm Friday. Six additional ceremonies will take place during the weekend. Roughly 6,000 students are expected to graduate. Doors open one hour before each ceremony. The University of North Alabama has lost a beloved mascot. Leo III died Friday, May 3. Una and Leo III were born November 18, 2002, at a wildlife refuge in New Hampshire. They flew to UNA in a Learjet donated by a UNA supporter when the two were just six weeks old. At the time they weighed nine and 10 pounds, respectively. In 2012, Leo III and Una were ranked No. 1 of the 25 Best Real Animal Mascots in College Football by totalprosports.com.

Friday’s weather is taking a toll one of Tuscaloosa’s biggest summer events. It’s “Live on the Plaza” event is cancelled due to the threat of thunderstorms. The performances originally scheduled for Friday, May 3 are being rescheduled for a later date. The outdoor concert series takes place in Tuscaloosa’s Government Plaza. It is a family friendly event and pets are allowed. The series runs each Friday of May and June, weather permitting.
