Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them.

Does your family talk about the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20)? The Bible tells us to “go” and “make disciples” of “all nations.” Surely we should be doing this wherever we are planted: discipling our kids, loving our neighbors, investing in our church. These are marching orders for every Christian and every church. Yet notice something: can we “make disciples” of “all nations” if we don’t “go”?

Read The Relief of the Gospel (Part 1) here. When I was in college, I spent every summer working as a counselor at a summer camp in Wisconsin. Some of the best and most transformative moments of my life happened at that camp. However, one of the harshest realities of my life happened there too.

My eyes have a hard time adjusting to the dark. Often, when I get out bed in the night and fumble for the door handle to our bedroom, I can hear my husband (who sees well in the dark) laughing. What a sight I must be as my outstretched hands flail about. First, I search for the wall, then the panels of the door, and finally I am able to grasp the doorknob. Although I’m a bit frustrated at not being able to see, I’m not deterred by the darkness. I know the door is there. It hasn’t moved.

Psalm 130:5-7 says:“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope;my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption.”On a sunny morning, not long ago, I stepped out for a walk. When I turned east towards the sunrise, I remember thinking, “The morning always comes.” I had just read Psalm 130, “. . .

Did you know there are 17,000 people groups in the world? And 7,000 people groups (3.2 billion people) currently have no witness to Jesus Christ among them? In light of these staggering facts and the mandate God has given his followers to make disciples of all nations, we must each ask ourselves this question: “What’s my role?”The answer to that question depends on two things: God’s investment in you and God’s assignment for you.

Want to interject a massive dose of awkwardness into your next conversation? Try casually asking the question, “So . . . who is your god?”For many in our culture, this question prompts a provocative or even puzzled response. Many in our increasingly secular culture recoil from any discussion of religious beliefs, and there is palpable reluctance to engage in public discourse regarding truth claims.

It is now fifty years—half a century—since I began teaching church history. Throughout the years, my approach to teaching the subject has undergone transformation. In the beginning, I concentrated on the dates, persons and events. But as the years have gone by, I’ve added an emphasis on the lessons of church history. I tell my students that church history is more than an academic subject—more than dates and dead people. For the Christian, church history helps us understand who we are.
