Pietermaritzburg hemp and cannabis industry players have welcomed the government’s decision to withdraw the law banning the sale of their products. The public is urged to avoid crossing flooded rivers and low-lying bridges following a tragic weekend, where three people lost their lives in separate drowning incidents along the Msunduzi River. In the first incident, Mlondolozi Masikane (57) from Smero, in Edendale, was found on Monday, stuck on the concrete pipes on the Mabane River low-lying bridge, after he was swept away while trying to cross last Friday. Masikane was on his way back home from visiting his friends across the bridge.

Disgruntled Northdale residents are taking a tough stance against the proposed Msunduzi tariff increase. Before February 28, the residents will submit a petition of more than 10 000 signatures all objecting to increase the tariffs. On the sidelines of a community meeting held at Club Woodlander on Sunday afternoon, facilitator Dev Naidoo said the municipality “has taken residents for granted for too long”.

Motorists travelling on the Old Howick Road have been warned to drive with extreme caution as repairs get underway after a 76-year-old woman died shortly after her vehicle collided with another while swerving to avoid the road repairs on Wednesday. Six hours after the first crash was cleared, another accident occurred in the same area, raising alarm over the lack of warning signs to alert motorists to the repairs underway by Msunduzi Municipality.
