The Monticello Community School District has had its own version of enforcing the use of cellphones and electronic devices during the school day, but after Governor Kim Reynolds signed a new legislation on April 30, all Iowa school districts must adopt policies banning the use of cellphones during class time. “We’ve had something in place for a while, but have gone away from having students put their phones in caddies or holders,” Superintendent Dr. Brian Jaeger said.

With the 2025 baseball season under way, the Monticello baseball team looks to a pair of returning starters and three returning letter-winners to lead the way. Head coach Kolby Harms enters his seventh season at the helm of Panther baseball holding a 74-68 record. Last season, the Panthers went 12-12 overall and tied for fourth in the River Valley Conference, North Division at 6-6.

With two weeks in as the Express Sports Editor, I’ve found myself already in the groove. Much like it takes a golfer a couple of holes to warm up (well, at least it takes me a few holes), it took me a week to get used to the ins-and-outs of how the Express operates. In my first week, I was lucky enough to cover Monticello soccer games, the Dessert Concert, along with various events at the schools.

After a 12-10 overall record and 8-4 conference record last season, the Midland baseball team returns seven letter winners to the diamond this year. Head coach Josh Soper welcomes back senior Kael Cress, along with juniors Anthony Harrington, Grady Sauer and Xander Eldred, sophomores Dane Ballou and Masyn Brodersen and freshman Corbin Eganhouse.

In the opening round of Class 1A, Region 8 action, May 19, the Monticello girls’ soccer team fell to Marquette Catholic of Bellevue, 2-0, after two second-half goals from the Defenders put them on top. “We were able to evade the rain, but not the wind, as we faced a Marquette team that we had tied 0-0 in our meeting earlier this season. Once again, both teams were evenly matched,” Panther coach Bruce Feuling said.
