Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) has been shown to be altered in patients with major depressive disorder. This situation may be rescued by effective antidepressants, many of which involve GABAergic action. There is recent evidence that propofol, a common anesthetic and GABA-A positive allosteric modulator, has antidepressant effects at high doses.
