Payson football busy in June

The high school football season doesn’t begin until the Longhorns host Fountain Hills on Aug. 22. But Payson’s football team is already preparing for the fall schedule to come with a busy June. Once again, the Longhorns will host a 7-on-7 passing league each Thursday this month. Rivals Show Low and Blue Ridge and others are expected to get together for both passing and tough-man contests between the teams.

It’s not all the region championships and state tournament wins that I’ll remember most about Brian Young. There were several of those. I met him in his first year as Payson’s varsity head baseball coach in 2013. I was covering No. 1 Show Low for the White Mountain Independent when his Longhorns upset the Cougars and star pitcher Zach Winn in the quarterfinals.
