Kentucky authorities put out an Amber Alert after a man allegedly shot his child’s mother in the back of the head and abducted the girl. The suspect, Byron Black, 42, and the missing daughter, Lela Black, 5, were last heard from on Friday, but state police were dispatched to the murder scene on Sunday, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. “He is suspected to be armed and dangerous,” they wrote.

On a rise of land just behind Lake Cowichan Secondary School, there is a cluster of 99 modest houses built during the late 1940s. Today, this 32-acre development is a well established part of the Town of Lake Cowichan, but in 1946 it was a treed parcel of land outside the town’s municipal boundaries. The homes resembled similar publicly-built rental developments constructed across Canada between 1941 and 1949.
