Southern Oregon softball achieved a historic feat as it clinched its fourth championship with a 6-3 win over Oklahoma City in the NAIA softball World Series in Columbus, Ga., on Thursday. The Raiders are the first team in tournament history to win the title after losing beginning the touranment with a loss. They faced seven consecutive elimination games after dropping their opener to Marian (Ind.).

Southern Oregon became the first team in 23 years to lose its first NAIA World Series softball game and earn a berth in the championship game Wednesday. The Raiders defeated Eastern Oregon 8-0 Wednesday morning in the final World Series consolation bracket game at Columbus, Ga. SOU, which lost its opener to Marian (Ind.) last Thursday, won five consecutive consolation bracket games to reach Wednesday afternoon’s championship game against Oklahoma City.

No. 7 seed Eastern Oregon encountered its first mishap in the NAIA World Series, falling to Oklahoma City 3-1 Tuesday the tournament semifinals at Columbus, Ga.The Mountaineers, who won their first three World Series games, fall into the elimination bracket, where they await the Southern Oregon-Georgia Gwinnett winner Wednesday morning for a chance to play for the national title. Southern Oregon’s game against Georgia Gwinnett was halted Tuesday in the seventh inning due to thunderstorms.

Southern Oregon softball is still standing, notching a third consecutive elimination-bracket win to stay alive in the NAIA World Series on Monday. It was another nail-biting battle for the No. 3-seeded Raiders, who prevailed over No. 6 Marian 7-6 in nine innings. Senior center fielder Sarah Kerling, who went 4-for-6 with three RBIs, sent a walk-off hit deep to center field in the ninth inning to secure the victory.
