Barring delays from Tropical Storm Debby, the next phase of the Complete 540 project is set to open to drivers at the end of the month. North Carolina Department of Transportation officials told WRAL that the ribbon cutting for the 18-mile stretch of the Southern Wake Expressway is set for Aug. 27. It is expected to fully open to traffic the following day at 6 a.m.The section, which is dubbed Phase 1, will extend the existing Triangle Expressway (N.C. Toll 540) between N.C. 55 Bypass and I-40.

Authorities have brought home the body of a decorated soldier from Aberdeen, who recently died in an off-duty parachuting incident. The late Sgt. First Class Dominic Perry arrived Thursday at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. He was 38. Family members and friends said Perry was family-oriented and a dedicated soldier who distinguishedly served his country. Perry enlisted in the Army in 2003 and found his place as a Golden Knight. In 2019, he joined the elite U.S. Army Parachute Team.

Egg prices have been increasing for months -- and it could get worse as poultry farms nationwide deal with bird flu outbreaks. The average price for a dozen eggs was $3 in February -- up from around $2 in the fall. Prices now are at their highest level since April 2023, and relief may be a long way off. Cal-Maine foods, America's largest egg producer, said this week it culled about 1.6 million hens and hundreds of thousands of young chickens.
