Those in the unit will visit crash sites, take information and ensure safety after minor wrecks and traffic problems. Police Chief Patrice Andrews said the program will free up more time for officers to respond to other matters. "It allows our officers to be able to focus on, you know, other higher priority calls, and they'll be they'll have to take crashes here and there, because as soon as someone there's an injury reported, obviously an officer will have to respond to that," Andrews said.

A Wake County schools teaching assistant accused of hitting a woman and threatening to stab her faces multiple charges. Danesha Demming, 33, of Raleigh, is charged with simple assault and communicating threats. Both charges are misdemeanors. According to warrants, Demming is accused of striking a woman's face "multiple times" and "causing cuts and bruising." She is also accused of threatening to stab the same woman while holding a knife in her hand.

In Raleigh and Cary, data shows animal cruelty cases are rising. Two men were arrested in April in different Raleigh incidents. Steven Hunter is accused of killing a pit bull and starving several others. In another instance, Joseph Clark is accused of cutting out a dog's intestines. This week, another man is facing charges of animal cruelty after his dog was found dead in his car.

A national outage impacted how the National Weather Service (NWS) issues its emergency alerts during severe storms Friday around the Triangle.
