MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - The Blue Earth County Board of Commissioners has voted to remove the historic Rapidan Dam. In their vote, the board asked county staff members to begin exploring options for the removal of the historic dam that failed on June 24 following heavy rain. The board also asked staff to look into the removal and replacement of the County Road 9 bridge just behind the dam. The bridge has been closed since the failure of the dam.

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - A Mankato man was sentenced to a Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud after almost a year since the case was filed. John Robert Olson was sentenced Tuesday, August 20 for the assault on his ex-girlfriend. The sentencing focused on three felony charges: 1st degree sexual assault, 1st degree assault and violating a no contact order. He was sentenced to 30 years for 1st degree criminal sexual conduct of which he has a 361-day credit already.

BLUE EARTH COUNTY, Minn. (KEYC) - Blue Earth County officials met with Minnesota Homeland Security and Emergency Management in a work session to learn more about their options concerning the Rapidan Dam and County Highway Bridge 9. “The bridge is somewhat on a separate track, but it’s dependent on the decision of the dam, because the bridge has to be designed to span a river channel,” BEC Public Works Director Ryan Thilges said.

NORTH MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - The North Mankato American Legion Post 518′s Mini VetsFest is about supporting veterans and enjoying live music. The event is part of a larger whole started by Pat McLaughlin 12 years ago. “So my band started going over to the VA Minneapolis Medical Center. We played for the guys in community living, and we saw some amazing things when some of these guys that were shut-ins were exposed to live music,” band leader Pat Mclaughlin said.
