    NEW ULM, Minn. (KEYC) - No one was injured as a rural New Ulm home is damaged by fire Thursday morning. The New Ulm Fire Department was called just after 11 AM to the home at 58608 County Road 21 in Lafayette Township. According to the New Ulm Fire Department, when firefighters arrived, the north side of the house was fully engulfed, and the fire was extending to the inside of the home. One person was able to get out of the home. No injuries were reported.

(KEYC) - After multiple attempts in recent weeks, a senior Department of Homeland Security official has responded to KEYC News Now’s request for comment following the deletion of five Minnesota State University Mankato students’ records from the student exchange visitor information system. In a statement, DHS says Homeland Security conducts regular reviews of student visa holders’ records to ensure they remain in compliance with the program requirements.

    MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - The next school year will start in August for students in the Mankato Area Public Schools. The reason: to accommodate construction in the summer of 2026 and minimize classtime disruptions. The school board approved the adjusted calendar at its meeting Monday night. Classes will start for 9th graders on August 25, 6th grade and the rest of the high school start on August 26th and with Kindergarden through 5th and 7th & 8th grade start August 27.

    MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - The Mankato school board is looking to finalize a change to the district calendar for the upcoming school year. The reason: to accommodate construction in the summer of 2026 and minimize classtime disruptions. In the latest proposal, school would start the week of August 25th and end the week before Memorial Day in May 2026. This would be accomplished by having shorter Thanksgiving and Winter breaks and moving some no-school days to the end of the year.

    MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - The Minnesota Department of Transportation is hosting a public open house on Monday, April 7 at the Kasota Community Center, 200 North Webster Street in Kasota, for the 2025-26 Highway 22 Mankato to St. Peter project. The construction open house will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a formal presentation at 5:30 p.m. MnDOT staff and the contractor will be available to provide more information about the project and answer questions.
