The Pioneer Valley softball team took care of business at Paso Robles Thursday, the Panthers got the help they needed from Orcutt Academy against Templeton, and now the Panthers have a chance to win the Sunset League championship outright. Pioneer Valley (16-11, 8-3) won 15-13 at Paso Robles (10-15-1, 5-6) and clinched a tie for the Sunset League title. Templeton had a chance to wrap up a share of the league title, but Orcutt Academy beat the Eagles 2-1 at Lakeview Junior High School Thursday.

It wasn't easy, but Mountain League champion Santa Ynez beat league rival, defending Division 2 champion and top seed Arroyo Grande for the third time this season Thursday night. The No. 8 Pirates beat the No. 1 Eagles 3-2 at Arroyo Grande's James Gymnasium in the quarterfinals of the CIF Central Section Division 2 Boys Volleyball Finals. Set scores were 25-13, 22-25, 24-26, 25-20, 15-13. The match took two hours. "It was a match worthy of a CIF final," said veteran coach Chip Fenenga.

Madera Matilda Torres averted one match point Thursday night when Orcutt Academy setter Miles Frantz served into the net. The Toros beat back two more match points on Angel Garcia's serve. Then Garcia hit a serve smack into the middle of the net, and the Spartans had a 3-0 sweep and an historic quarterfinals win on their first-year home floor in the CIF Central Section Division 3 Boys Volleyball Playoffs. Set scores were 25-16, 25-17, 25-23.

Gabriel Moreno hit a grand slam off Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the fourth inning Thursday, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3. The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-5 in Anaheim Thursday. At press time Friday, the Dodgers were to resume their series against the Diamondbacks, and the Angels were to host Baltimore over the weekend. The San Diego Padres were to play at Colorado.

Hancock College freshman Jacob Garbiso has qualified for the Southern Cal Championships in the men's hammer throw — not bad for his rookie year in the event. Garbiso is a veteran when it comes to competing in the shot put and discus. In fact, he won the boys shot put title at the Mountain League championships last year as a senior at Arroyo Grande High School.
