Others are too easily turned off by the academic rigor required. But teachers who are passionate about those subjects, and genuinely believe most students can succeed in them, can shift those negative perspectives and get more kids jazzed about studying STEM.

The algorithms that drive artificial intelligence are rooted in sophisticated mathematical concepts. So, then, it might make sense that the marriage between AI and math instruction in K-12 schools would be a good one. As it turns out, it is not that simple. Building a foundation of math knowledge and skills—beginning as early as preschool and continuing throughout high school—requires a lot of trial and error, development of foundational math skills, persistence, and good teaching.

Americans’ opinions about the quality of public education in the United States continue to decline, according to a Gallup poll released Feb. 5. The percentage of adults who report feeling dissatisfied about public education has increased steadily from 62 percent to 73 percent between 2019 and 2025, according to Gallup’s annual “Mood of the Nation” survey. The percentage of adults who now feel satisfied with public education is the lowest since 2001, the report notes.
