AbstractDuring meiosis, the parental chromosomes are drawn together to enable exchange of genetic information. Chromosomes are aligned through the assembly of a conserved interface, the synaptonemal complex, composed of a central region that forms between two parallel chromosomal backbones called axes. Here we identify the axis-central region interface in C. elegans, containing a conserved positive patch on the axis component HIM-3 and the C-terminus of the central region protein SYP-5.

A man has been airlifted to hospital after he suffered serious burns in a workplace accident in South Clare this afternoon. The alarm was raised shortly before 3pm when a fire was reported a premises in Drumquin between Ennis and Ballynacally. It’s understood the injured man in his 60s, a motor mechanic who operates his own business, sustained severe burns and smoke inhalation as he attempted to extinguish the fire himself.

The niece of a 78-year-old widower has told the Central Criminal Court that her family have experienced a raw, pervasive fear “stemming from the chilling reality of evil so close to home”. The testimony was heard as part of three emotional victim impact statements read today to the Central Criminal Court, where 34-year-old Thomas Lorigan was sentenced to the mandatory term of life imprisonment for murdering his uncle Mr O’Neill.

Five people were taken to hospital following a road traffic collision in Clare on Sunday evening. The two-car crash occurred at around 6.30pm on the N67 Spanish Point road out of Miltown Malbay about 500m from the town’s square and outside the local GAA field. Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Ennistymon station responded to the scene along with National Ambulance Service paramedics and Gardaí.
