A Calgary theatre company is getting requests from zoos all over North America to make them lifelike animal puppets. Dean Bareham, founder and artistic director of the Green Fools Theatre, has been creating puppets of all sizes since 1991. He’s developed a partnership with the Calgary Zoo over the last three years to help shine a light on endangered species through puppets.

Calgary is hosting some of the best amateur pianists in the world at two weekend concerts. Les Amateurs Virtuoses Piano Festival is bringing together amateur pianists from France, Japan, the United States and Canada. This is the first time the event is being hosted in a North American city. The performers are made up of international competition-winning artists who have pursued successful careers outside of music and manage to find time to work and perform at the highest levels.

MINI THNI - Drew Van Allen is in his 10th year as music teacher at Nakoda Elementary School, west of Calgary but this year turned out to be a little bit more special than all the rest. At the end of March, Van Allen and five other teachers from all across Canada were nominated at the Junos for the 2025 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award. Van Allen didn’t win but says it was an honour to be recognized.
Edge School ballet dancers prepare for international competition in Florida

Dancers at Alberta’s Edge School are heading to Tampa, Fla., later this month to compete in the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP), a competition featuring dancers from around the world. Edge School dancers earned a place in the finals after strong performances in the semi-finals in Kansas City, Mo., in February. “The Youth America Grand Prix is the largest scholarship opportunity in the world for dance students,” said Caitlin Lockwood, principal of the ballet program at Edge School.

A group of Calgary students who build robots for fun are heading to Houston to compete in world championships. The 10015 HyperDroids is a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) team made up of eight local students who share a common interest in STEM and robotics. The robot they built came in first at the Alberta provincial tournament and that’s earned them a spot in Houston, Texas at the FTC World Championship for the second year in a row.
Western Canadian sledge hockey teams converge on Calgary for tournament

The 19th annual Matt Cook Western Canadian Sledge Hockey Tournament kicks off April 4 at WinSport. Twenty-four teams from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba will face off against each other in three days of action-packed games. It’s the most the tournament has had sign up. The event is hosted by the Calgary Sledge Hockey Association (CSHA). “It’s in honour of national team player Matt Cook,” said Auren Halbert, player and organizer.

The Calgary Public Library Foundation is raising funds to build an Outdoor Early Learning Centre filled with permanent play structures, imagination spaces, and intuitive design elements to incorporate nature into the constructed learning environment. “We are launching the Pathway to Play campaign in support of building an Outdoor Early Learning Centre at the Signal Hill Library,” said Tracy Johnson, the foundation’s CEO.
