NORTON, Va. — When anyone sees Sammy Belcher coming, there are two things to count on. The 64-year-old photographer will have a smile on his face, and he’ll almost always greet you with a joke or a comment to try put a smile on yours. It would be understandable if Belcher didn’t have such a sunny disposition. It would even be understandable if he decided to call it quits on his busy schedule that carries him throughout the region. Instead, he keeps moving, one step at a time.

That guy, Ray Spenilla, may give you a variety of things. At the very least, you’ll get a smile and a ‘how are doing?’ from the energetic, unassuming Spenilla.

LEBANON, Va. – During the height of its growth in 1985, Bonanza Steakhouse opened a location in Lebanon. The popular restaurant chain had locations all over the Tri-Cities with two locations each in Bristol and Kingsport. By 1989, around 600 Bonanza restaurants dotted the map across the country. Today, that number has dropped dramatically. Tim Fields, the local franchisee of the Bonanza in Lebanon, says there are three restaurants that still carry the Bonanza name – his and two in Pennsylvania.

Campus keeps tradition strong

GATE CITY, Va. - When Pat Elliott retired from the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority, he was looking for something to keep busy. The Campus restaurant in Gate City just happened to fit the bill. “I put in 20 years of working at the old (Scott) County jail and the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield and when I left there, I needed something to do,” Elliott said.
