Provincial police say officers were forced to break into a home in Orillia, Ont., on Wednesday after a neighbour reported a “strong smell” emanating from inside the house. At around 1 p.m., officers were dispatched to a home on Carlton Street and soon discovered an extensive amount of pet food outside the house, according to a police release.

Ontario Provincial Police in Huron County say a farmer falsely cried fowl after it was reported that 45,000 chicks had gone missing from a farm in the area back in 2023. Police say they have conducted a lengthy investigation into the incident, charging a 41-year-old man from South Huron with fraud over $5,000 and public mischief. Initially, police reported that 30,000 chicks went missing from a farm in South Huron, near Exeter, Ont., sometime between April 19 and April 20, 2023.

Mitch Marner played the hero on Wednesday night for the Maple Leafs as he scored the winner in the third period, giving Toronto a 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers, along with a 2-0 series lead. The two sides each notched a pair of goals before Leafs forward Max Domi scored with less than three minutes remaining in the second period. Florida evened the score at 5:33 of the third when Panthers forward Antony Lundell shovelled his third goal of the playoffs past Joseph Woll.

A new report prepared by City of Toronto staff is not ruling out a bridge to the Toronto Islands but notes that there are a number of constraints to the idea, including a price tag of at least $100 million. The report, which will be received by council on May 25, recommends that a task force be formed to solve the issue of transportation to the Islands, which see around 18,000 visitors per day on weekends and holidays through the summer.

An Ontario recycling body has fined three major battery manufacturers millions of dollars after they had not done enough to get used batteries recycled in 2023. The Resource Product and Recovery Authority (RPRA) said it issued fines of $1 million to both Duracell and Energizer and $781,725 to Panasonic for failing to meet the 2023 management requirement for single-use batteries.
