The surfer tackled by a Belmar cop last summer during a confrontation over whether he needed a beach badge pleaded guilty Tuesday to violating the town’s badge ordinance. Liam Mahoney, the 29-year-old Californian, took the deal as part of plea bargain in which he was accepted into a diversion program that will see the three more-serious charges - disorderly conduct, obstruction, resisting arrest – dismissed if he complies with a year of probation.

Over a dozen victims of the Art All Night mass shooting in Trenton will split a $2.5 million legal settlement, with the city of Trenton chipping in up to $500,000 of the money, according to an attorney for the arts group. The June 2018 shooting at the 24-hour art event left a man dead, wounded about 20 people and injured 30 in all. The settlement was hammered out in Superior Court of Mercer County over the past six years following the first civil suit filed shortly after the shooting.

State prosecutors are dropping charges against a Trenton police officer who pepper sprayed a man who later died following a 2020 confrontation in front of his city home, officials said. Officer Nicholas Piotrowski faced a single charge of official misconduct in the death of Joseph Ahr Sr. Ahr, 64, died in a hospital 18 days after his arrest. The case against Piotrowski was scheduled for trial next week.

A Montgomery Township woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to the crime of bank robbery for a heist last year in Princeton that netted her $60,500 in cash. Ciara Brascom, 38, officially pleaded guilty in front of a judge in federal court in Trenton, records show. She signed the plea bargain on April 22. The deal requires Brascom to pay back the $60,500 that TD Bank branch employees handed to her on July 28, 2024, at a branch on Route 206.

A Middlesex County man is getting a third trial in the death of a man he met online and who police found dead of stab wounds in his Sayreville townhouse in 2013. An appeals court on Wednesday found an error in Robert McGranahan’s latest trial, in 2022, that necessitates his conviction be overturned. The jury should have been instructed they could have found the crime to be passion/provocation manslaughter, the decision explains.
