A New Jersey man who was driving 107 mph when he slammed into a parked car and killed a sleeping 8-year-old boy in Absecon was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in state prison. Edward Johnston, 25, had plead guilty to aggravated manslaughter in March in state Superior Court in Atlantic County. He will be required to serve at least 12 years and nine months before he is eligible for parole.

If a potential strike by NJ Transit train engineers goes into effect on Friday, the agency is advising people to work from home if they can. But what if you can’t? Both NJ Transit and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers were in Washington, D.C. on Monday to continue negotiations with the help of the National Mediation Board. If they can’t come to terms, a a strike will begin May 16. Commuters may be stuck figuring out a plan to get around New Jersey or into New York City.

New Jersey will again close public access to five wildlife management areas this summer to prevent swimming in unguarded waters and the operation of off-road vehicles. The areas, several of which have large, unguarded lakes and ponds, will be closed May 22 through Sept. 1, the state Department of Environmental Protection announced Friday.

The track with an on-site parking garage in the 300 block of E. Cedar Avenue has been listed for $6.9 million. At 1 acre, the property is zoned for commercial use, making it appealing for developers looking to establish another business in town.

What happens if NJ Transit’s engineers go on strike next week? Some New Jersey towns aren’t willing to wait to find out. Metuchen is trying to gather enough support from commuters to launch a commuter bus route with charter bus company Boxcar. “We’re working with Boxcar to launch a direct commuter bus route from Metuchen to NYC giving our residents a reliable backup option before chaos hits,” borough officials wrote in a post to the Metuchen’s Facebook page.
