Then-Surgeon General Vivek Murthy penned an op-ed on the subject last year. He cited a survey that found the average teen spent nearly five hours per day on social media in 2023, and he mentioned recent research that suggested spending over three hours daily on apps doubledthe risk of poor mental health outcomes like anxiety and depression.

Middlebury’s drone program only launched this year, and the town’s select board voted unanimously to authorize the purchase of that thermal drone in June. Middlebury is no outlier.

The sounds of button mashing, belly laughs, and players yelling over each other are some of the dominant noises you'll hear at a video game tournament, including Smash Crash, a Super Smash Brothers gathering held recently at Burlington Beer Company. Sometimes the community side of a tournament like this takes precedence over the competitive. Winooski resident Duncan Hacker is no stranger to the chaos. He was a frequent fighter at Vermont-based Smash events from the mid-2010s onward.

The war between Israel and Hamas has taken a huge toll — far greater than we can recount. The conflict is deeply personal for many people, including here in Vermont. But it's hard to talk about. Two women with Vermont ties and personal connections to the war — one who is Palestinian and one who is Jewish — were open to sharing how it has impacted them. This piece was produced for the ear. We highly recommend listening to the audio.
