Customers in the payments space expect a real-time experience as we move into a real-time economy. Businesses that can adapt to the rapid and transformative changes shaping that economy will be best placed to succeed in 2025. The new year will be a period of uncertainty and volatility in the Asian region, but also one of opportunity. Global trade, critical for Asia's economic prosperity, will be impacted by the tariff policies of the incoming administration in the United States. This is a major source of downside risk to the region's growth prospects for 2025. In a bid to offset the impact of these moves, ANZ Research expects China to implement fiscal and monetary stimulus measures to support domestic demand.

To celebrate the half century of partnership, the 2024 ASEAN-Australia Special Summit is taking place in Melbourne this week (March 4-6). Deepening engagement with ASEAN and its member states is a priority for Australia. From an economic perspective, ASEAN’s population of 680 million puts one of the world’s fastest growing regions right at Australia’s doorstep. ASEAN’s combined nominal gross domestic product, $US2 trillion in 2010, is expected to reach $US4 trillion ($6.1 trillion) this year.

Bond purchases by foreign investors in key Asian markets surged last month, sparked by a significant fall-off in US Treasury yields and a shift in Federal Reserve rate cuts forecasts. Foreign investors made their largest monthly net purchase since May, buying a total of $6.36 billion in South Korean, Indian, Malaysian, Indonesian and Thai bonds last month, their biggest monthly net buying since May, according to data from regulatory authorities and bond market associations.
