The highly contagious white spot disease has been detected in wild prawn populations offshore areas near the Clarence, Evans and Richmond rivers. The discovery came just as a two-year ban on the sale of green prawns from the Clarence River was due to end. Prawn fishermen in the Clarence say a two-year extension to an existing control order could end their industry.

As the global trade war escalates, Australian meat exporters are growing increasingly worried about the possibility of a recession. Australia exports about 70 per cent of what is produced by the agriculture sector, according to the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES). The biggest exports are grains, meat, cotton and wool.

For four weeks Sarvan Singh has salvaged what fruit he can from the floor of his banana plantation in the Tweed Valley. Highly destructive winds ripped through his 8-hectare farm on the Cudgen plateau last month, knocking plants with full bunches to the ground. It has left him without an income for the next year. Mr Singh said the winds were too much for half of his 20,000 trees, which he had tied and propped up. He said he had lost about 90 per cent of his production.

NSW farmers are assessing the cost of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, with a reported damage bill so far of $17 million. Horticultural businesses across the Northern Rivers region are some of the worst impacted. NSW Nationals leader Dugald Saunders has called for immediate cash grants for impacted farmers. Farmers across the NSW North Coasthave reported damages of $17 million as they continue to take stock of the impact of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Dairy farmers have been forced to dump thousands of litres of milk due to flooding caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Some producers have found ways to use their excess milk and processor Norco has continued to pay those unable to have the product delivered. Some farmers remain unsure when trucks will regain access to their properties.
