Jay Byers, the president of Simpson College and former longtime CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, has died unexpectedly. Byers, 54, was found dead at the Sigler House, the president's residence near campus, on April 17 after a welfare check around noon. Byers had been president of the private college in Indianola since July 2023. Indianola Police Chief Brian Sher said the cause of death was under investigation but there was no reason to suspect foul play.

A Des Moines police officer suffered head and jaw injuries when a suspect he was attempting to arrest allegedly "violently assaulted him," according to a police news release Wednesday. Senior police officer Chad Ruroden fired his weapon during the struggle March 20, striking 19-year-old Jose Daniel Rodriguez-Sanchez in the upper torso.

An Iowa man has been charged with first-degree murder for allegedly killing his wife to "put her out of misery" from medical issues related to bipolar disorder and multiple sclerosis, according to court documents. Richard James Hoesing, 75, called police Sunday to allegedly report he killed his wife, Jean Ann Hoesing, at their home in Perry. Officers found Jean Hoesing in a bed with her throat slit, court documents say.

Des Moines police were justified in shooting and killing an unarmed man in January, the Iowa Attorney General's Office said Thursday. Two officers shot and killed Brandon Mitchell inside his girlfriend's north side home Jan. 24 as they attempted to arrest him on felony warrants. Mitchell, who was hiding in the crawl space of a closet, told police three times he had a gun and pointed to his waist.
