A motorcyclist who admitted he drove while intoxicated has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a crash that cost the life of his passenger. Todd Phillips, 45, of Colfax pleaded guilty to operating while intoxicated, second offense, and vehicular homicide by reckless driving in the July 27 death of passenger Michelle Shawhan, 46, of Des Moines. Phillips, who a police K9 found hiding near the wreck site, also pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident.

Nobody has accused Jonathan Brewer Jr. of intending to kill Michael Clark. But the fact remains, he did. Brewer, 49, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for assaulting Clark, 53, at the Polk County Jail in June 2023. Clark had been detained on a simple misdemeanor charge when Brewer, whose attorney says he was high on drugs, ran from officers who were escorting him to charge at and head-butt Clark in the face.

A Muscatine woman has been sentenced to prison after vandalizing Hispanic businesses with swastikas, making a bomb threat and other misconduct. Alisa Staats, 30, faced a slew of charges after her arrest in January. Police said she had targeted at least three local restaurants as well as Muscatine City Hall, a public school and the Muscatine Community College, to which Staats made a phone call threatening to detonate a bomb.
