AUSTIN — The roof hasn’t exactly caved in on the Texas baseball team, but that ain’t exactly celebratory confetti falling on the Longhorns these days. Red-hot Florida struck for six runs in its first at-bat and cruised to a 8-2 pounding of top-ranked Texas to continue the home team’s recent tailspin. The Longhorns have now lost four consecutive SEC games to fall to 19-6 but still lead second-place Arkansas by 1½ games.

AUSTIN — Texas goes for the clincher this week. While that seems unfathomable, considering the top-ranked Longhorns have nine conference games remaining and six of them on the road, starting with the first of a three-game series Thursday night at Arkansas, it is possible. Texas (38-5) holds an impressive 19-2 SEC record and could clinch no worse than a share of its first title in that league with any combination of Longhorn wins and losses by Arkansas and LSU totaling four.
