“Very cold! Taynton Bowl closed,” the sign reads as I unload from Panorama Mountain Resort’s Summit Chair. I’ve been psyching myself up for this for days, preparing to ski my advanced-but-not-expert butt into Taunton Bowl’s 750-acre powder playground, best known for its steeps, deeps, and perfect fall lines. I’m told all those who ski here end up head over heels (in love, that is, not down the hill – although both are possible).

To set the scene, this is the kind of place where private jets queue at the local airport. It’s not unheard of to drop $US895 ($1440) on the most famous cowboy hat in the world, sold at Western-wear boutique Kemo Sabe and worn by the likes of Rihanna, Beyoncè and the Kardashians.

Dining in Marseille’s buzzing Old Port is a wonderful experience. Waterfront restaurants stretch in every direction, there’s live music in the square, and golden light dances on the water as the sun sets behind the Basilica of Our Lady of the Guard, which sits proudly on a nearby hilltop. But it’s also pricey – this is where everyone wants to be, so dinner can easily be €35-€50 ($57-$82) a person, even before you add wine.
