Pieces of furniture are utilitarian objects primarily defined by their function. Chairs are meant for sitting, beds are for sleeping, armoires are for storing stuff. But furniture has a history and connotations that transcend pure use. Before cabinets became customary in European homes in the fifteenth century, for example, they were part of the furnishings of churches, holding relics and the vestments and implements needed for services.
