On Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst’s “The Call”THERE WASN’T A BIBLE IN SIGHT, but the Serpentine North Gallery still felt like a place of worship thanks to The Hearth, 2024, a gigantic wall-mounted suite of GPU cooling fans that doubled as a church organ, blaring out AI-generated hymns that echoed throughout the entrance area. One of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s remarkable early accomplishments was the long poem that lent its title to his 1961 collection of poetry, La Religione del mio tempo, or “The Religion of My Time.” And while religion was many things to Pasolini, what he was most religiously devoted to might have been the idea of being of his time. His writing—whether in the form of poetry, fiction or polemic, among which he passionately blurred the distinctions—staked a great deal on immediacy.

Looking over my notes on Jacqueline de Jong’s exhibition “La petite mort,” I found myself confused for a moment. Surely there were more paintings than the eight listed in the checklist. I recounted, and yes, there really were only eight; it’s just that there was so much more going on here than that number of paintings should possibly be able to contain.
