Here’s a confession: I grew up in a small town where the idea of “night fun” involves stargazing, taking leisurely late-night walks, or being serenaded by the oddly calming sound of chirping crickets. So, the first time I set foot into the city’s pulsating nightlife scene, I was culture shocked. Don’t get me wrong, though. Despite my upbringing, I wasn’t entirely in the dark—pun intended—about what goes on in the urban jungle. I knew what I was getting into.

There are a variety of things that make the Student Experience™ unique to every individual—your chosen degree, the school culture, the environment, and yes, even the controversies. Despite these idiosyncrasies, though, one thing seemingly universal (especially among campus press) is the struggle to call out systemic flaws without falling victim to administrative censorship. Unless it’s Jose Rizal (ahem, “Life and Works of Rizal”) we’re talking about, textbooks often paint historical figures in broad strokes. The focus is always on their legacies and larger-than-life personas—leaving little to no room for things that *actually* humanize them. We may know Melchora Aquino as the “Grand Woman of the Revolution” or Edgar Jopson (a.k.a. Edjop) as a martyred Atenean activist.

“There’s no such thing as a new idea.” Everything we make is influenced by something that came before it—and this rings especially true in the realm of K-pop. Remember when Blackpink sampled “La Campanella” in their single “Shut Down”? Or when Ive and Saweetie revived “All Night” by Icona Pop? Many K-pop groups now thrive on nostalgia that sampling (or remake) has seemingly become the practice.
