TOLEDO, Ohio — March 27 is Jersey Mike's National Day of Giving and this year, the business has partnered with the Justice for Sierah Foundation. Sierah Joughin was abducted and killed while riding her bike in 2016. Joughin was a student at the University of Toledo and would now be 28 years old. "To really show her and how much she loved life and her family and her community as well, really makes it worth doing this," Sean Ross, general manager at Jersey Mike's on Alexis Road, said.

ROSSFORD, Ohio — At Friday night's Rossford Varsity Boys Basketball against Genoa, all those in attendance stood for a moment of silence to honor a former Rossford High School student. Ace Cuellar, 17, was studying at Penta Career Center but had been a Rossford student since he was in kindergarten. Thursday night, the Ohio State Patrol said Ace was killed in a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Dorr and North Crissey Road. Two other teenagers were seriously injured.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo City Council member John Hobbs grew up in Toledo and now represents a neighborhood that has seen the homicides of two young people in just a matter of months. In April, 17-year-old Mark Wortham was shot and killed at a home on Amsterdam Road. Just down the street, 16-year-old Eric Scott was killed in a shooting Wednesday. "As I heard about this story, as it popped up on my phone, I could barely even.... My dinner was ruined," Hobbs said.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Matt Thieman and his brother, both professional tree trimmers, were trimming a tree at their mother's west Toledo home Saturday morning when tragedy struck. "It was just a freak accident," said Thieman's sister, Heidi Franz. "The tree broke in a spot that nobody could have predicted and it fell. When it fell my brother was running away from it struck him in the back." Thieman suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung and severe injuries to his neck and back, leaving him paralyzed.
