The man arrested outside the UnitedHealthcare campus in Minnetonka on Monday is expected to face a judge on Tuesday, as investigators say the suspect had been trying to get attention. Tuesday’s appearance comes about four months after the company’s CEO, Brian Thompson, was gunned down in Manhattan. Barriers have been up at the campus since then, and a source tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS they did as they were intended.

Investigators in Toronto are looking at strong wind and snow as being possible factors in Monday’s plane crash, which involved an aircraft traveling from the Twin Cities and left at least 21 people hurt. According to the airline’s website, the Delta Care Team is still in Toronto to support customers, employees and families of those involved in the flight, which was operated by Endeavor Air.

The girls state hockey tournament is getting underway at Xcel Energy Center. Sixteen teams will be playing over the next few days in one of the most exciting weeks of hockey in Minnesota. Among those teams are Orono and Fergus Falls, who are kicking things off, followed by Warroad and Marshall for Class A. AA teams play starting Thursday, with most of them playing at the X, but other games may be played at the TRIA Rink in the Treasure Island Center.

A 21-year-old man charged with criminal vehicular operation after seriously injuring a three-year-old girl and then fleeing the scene in northeast Minneapolis last year will be spending time in the county jail and on probation. On Thursday, Judge Amber Brennan sentenced Jaelyn Steven Evans to 180 days in the Hennepin County Jail. He will be eligible for work release and will also spend three years on probation.

UPDATE 2/3/25: Police in St. Cloud say a teenager has died and a 19-year-old is in critical condition after a shooting early Sunday morning on the city’s northeast side. Early Monday, police announced an update to their investigation, which began just before 3 a.m. Sunday on the 200 block of 2nd Street Northeast. There, officers found a 19-year-old who had been shot in a hallway on the first floor of an apartment building.

The lack of snow in northern Minnesota has caused two popular sled dog races to be postponed. On Thursday, organizers announced the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon — which was previously scheduled for late January — has been postponed to March 2 due to “unsafe” trail conditions, saying there is insufficient snow and icy terrain along the course.

A few changes will be made to normal programming on KSTP-TV on Tuesday and Wednesday. With Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest starting at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on ABC, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS will be airing a 9 p.m. newscast instead of at 10 p.m. The Rockin’ Eve program will last into the New Year. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Rose Bowl will air on channel 5 starting at 10 a.m., meaning there won’t be a Midday Newscast at 11 a.m. However, a noon newscast will still air on 45TV.
