    An electric ferry which has sat idle in Wellington's harbour for the past nine months should return to service next month. Ika Rere - operated by East by West Ferries - has been out of action since July 2024, when a mechanical fault stopped the vessel from making its scheduled trips across Wellington Harbour. The ferry has been parked up at Queen's Wharf ever since.

    A watchdog has found police acted appropriately during a pursuit in Ōtaki near Wellington, where two people died in a crash after the pursuit was abandoned. On 26 April last year, police briefly pursued a stolen Ford Courier ute travelling south from Levin on State Highway 1 that had been involved in an aggravated robbery in Ōtaki. The pursuit was abandoned due to excessive speed.

    Politicians from both sides of the aisle convened on Parliament Grounds on Thursday afternoon as Greyhounds for Pets (GAP) trotted out some rehomed racing dogs as part of its annual adoption campaign. Last year, the government announced it would ban greyhound racing, and had rushed through legislation designed to protect the dogs during the transition period. With 3000 dogs needing to be rehomed as the racing ban looms, GAP brought its campaign to the feet of Parliament.

    Residents of a Wellington suburb that campaigned hard for a lower speed limit now face losing it. Under the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024 councils are required to lift some roads from 30 kilometres per hour to 50kmh. In Wellington, the council has identified three roads that will need to increase under the rules - parts of Adelaide Road and Rintoul Street in Newtown, as well as The Parade in Island Bay.
