Gardnerville woman up for public administrator

The federal governmentâs loss might be Douglas Countyâs gain. County commissioners are scheduled to discuss appointing Gardnerville resident Wendy Sharp as public administrator on Thursday. According to her application, Sharp was caught up in the national layoff of federal probationary staff. County commissioners meet 10 a.m. Thursday in the Douglas County Courthouse in Minden. Genoa, Nev. — I did a brief damage survey of the Gardnerville Ranchos on Tuesday morning. Spotted some fences down and Joe Benigno’s was doing some work, but I didn’t see a lot of shingles missing from roofs. I’m sure some folks had roof damage, but I’ve seen a lot worse over the years, including the big blow of 2015.

Genoa, Nev. — Patrons of the Minden Post Office found themselves having to egress out the ingress on Monday after a tree knocked out a power pole and transformer, closing the alley and exit onto 10th Street. Power was fully restored in Douglas County by Monday evening, though the vast majority of NVEnergy customers were back on around lunchtime. Tahoe Douglas Fire Chief Scott Lindgren is speaking to the Good Governance Group noon today at the COD Casino. Bring $5 for the room and beverages.

Wind is the likely cause of a power outage than affected more than 1,000 Douglas County homes and businesses early this morning. NVEnergy.com reported 1,085 Douglas County customers were without power as a cold front blasted into Western Nevada.

Genoa, Nev. — As of 7:30 a.m. today, NVenergy.com is reporting 7,390 Douglas County homes and businesses without power, with 5,283 in the Gardnerville Ranchos and 2,001 in Gardnerville. The only restoration estimate is noon for 20 customers in the 89460 ZIP Code. Most of the outages have been in effect since early this morning, but as recently as 7:35 a.m. East Fork firefighters were responding to wires down on Baltic in south Gardnerville.
Genoans back Kinsey House preservation

An effort to add one of the oldest homes in Nevada to Mormon Station State Historic Park was recommended by Genoa Town Board members on Wednesday. A special use permit is making its way through the county for the Kinsey House, located at 196 Genoa Lane, next door to the state park. Work to preserve the property and home began after the demise of owner Betty Bourne on Oct. 29, 2023, at age 94.
Gardnerville OKs laundry agreement

An agreement between the town and the various agencies involved with the eventual demolition of the Nishikida laundry building was approved by Gardnerville Town Board members on Tuesday. Owner Dave Nishikida told town board members that he was onboard with tearing the building down, but that he felt out of the loop about the status of the project, which has been underway for a half-dozen years.

Genoa, Nev. — St. Gall Catholic Church is prepared for 500 people to attend Father John Corona’s funeral 11 a.m. today. I expect there will be some significant traffic on Centerville this morning. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Better Business Bureau are conducting a senior scam seminar 10 a.m. today at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center, 1329 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville.
Ebbetts Pass reopening a sure sign spring is here

One way to determine what sort of winter the central Sierra Nevada experienced is the date when Ebbetts Pass opens for the season. This year that occurred noon Thursday, according to the California Department of Transportation. The pass closed on Dec. 16, according to CalTrans. While the earliest the pass has reopened since 2020, itās just a day after the 2024 opening. Most years Ebbetts is open by mid-May, though the record winter of 2023 had it closed until June 8.
