Nevada is the only state in the U.S. with a commercial lithium mine, and it has several other lithium mines in the development process. Putting tariffs on lithium imported from China would seem to create more demand, and a higher price, for lithium mined in Nevada. So why is Nevada Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo asking President Donald Trump to remove tariffs on lithium from China? Because Nevada also has hopes of becoming a national hub for manufacturing lithium batteries.

Did you hear the one about everybody worldwide, probably even the penguins on those islands, telling Trump they would do whatever Trump says because he’s the greatest tariff negotiator in the whole history of ever? Nevada Democratic U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford heard it, while he was in a House Ways and Means Committee hearing Wednesday in which Trump’s U.S. Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, was testifying. And Horsford wasn’t buying it.

The one Nevadan who is in the best position to help stop Donald Trump from sabotaging the global economy and shattering the financial stability of Nevada households is Nevada’s only Republican in the Republican-controlled Congress, Rep. Mark Amodei. Politico reported Friday that Amodei’s fellow House Republican, Don Bacon of Nebraska, plans to introduce a House version of a bipartisan-backed Senate bill empowering Congress to cancel tariffs ordered by a president.

“When he was campaigning Trump told you he was going to raise tariffs, so he’s doing what he campaigned on,” is a thing people say. Fair enough. When he was campaigning, Trump also promised “Starting on Day 1, we will end inflation and make America affordable again,” as well as “Prices will come down.
